Lord and Lady Algy

Lord and Lady Algy is a comedy in three acts by R.C. Carton (1853-1928)[1]

The original text

A comedy about Lord Algy's gambling obsession and its impact on his marriage, the comedy premiered in London in 1898 and produced in New York at the Empire Theatre by Charles Frohman from 14 February to May, 1899.

Translations and adaptations

The play was made into a 1919 American silent comedy film directed by Harry Beaumont.[2] (The film itself is lost.)

Performance history in South Africa

1899: Performed by a company led by Frank Atherley, under the management of the Wheeler-Edwardes Company, appearing in the Opera House, Cape Town, early in the year.

1903: Performed by the Sass and Nelson Company, appearing in the Opera House, Cape Town, in June, with Emma Glynne as "Lady Algernon Chetland".
