Marie Simon

Marie Simon is a French play in five acts by Jules-Édouard Alboize de Pujol (1805-1854)[], Saint Yves (pseud of E. Déaddé (1808-1871)[1]) and Adolphe Choler (1821-1889)[2].

The original text

First performed in Paris at the Théatre l'Ambigu Comique on 27 September, 1852. Published in Théatre Contemporain Illustré in Paris by Michel Lévy frères and in Brussels by Lelong in the same year.

Translations and adaptations

Adapted into English as Lilian Gervais, a drama in three acts, by Morris Barnett (1800–1856)[3] (originally known as Lilian Rene, or The Pearl of Normandy[4]). First performed at the Olympic Theatre, London, on 17 January 1853. Published by Thomas Hailes Lacy as vol. 31, no. 464 in the same year.

Performance history in South Africa

1866: Performed in English as Lilian Gervais by the Le Roy and Duret theatre company in the Theatre Royal in Harrington Street, Cape Town, on 6th August along with a Shadow Pantomime (Anon.), On the Sly (Morton), and a comic dance called Gocum and Lisbeth, performed by Mr Luin and Harry Burton.
