He made his debut as a stage actor in 1937 at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge as "Cinna the Poet" in Julius Caesar (Shakespeare).
He developed a passionate interest in the Boer War when he visited South Africa in 1952 to play "Oberon" in the Old Vic Company's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Tyrone Guthrie. His collection of the war memorabilia was so vast that it took over2 floors of his house.He wrote books and television programmes on the subject. A projected film on Baden Powell was prevented by a union ban on filming in South Aftica.
