John Ashton Jones

John Ashton Jones was a musical director in Port Elizabeth's amateur theatre. He was also a music teacher at the Grey High School.

Biography

Born: ????.

He studied at the Royal College of Music in London.

His first stay in South Africa was between 1960 and 1963.

On his return to England, he taught the boys on wind instruments at Shrewsbury School.

In 1968 he returned to South Africa and was on the staff of the Conservatoire of Music at the University of Port Elizabeth until the end of 1972.

He frequently broadcast for the SABC.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

1962: Played in the orchestra for My Fair Lady

1972: Musical Director for Annie Get Your Gun for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

1973: Musical Director for South Pacific for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

circa 1973: Guys and Dolls for the University of Port Elizabeth.

1974: Musical Director for the Collegiate School for Girls Centenary production of The Gondoliers.
