Lt. Col. James Cockburn (17**- 18**) was a member of the garrison at Cape Town and possibly an amateur thespian.

He was one of the original 24 shareholders, to whom a section of the Boerenplein ("Farmer's Square", also known as Hottentot's Square or Van Riebeeck Square) was donated by Sir George Yonge for the building of a theatre, which became The African Theatre.
