Jefferson Tshabalala (19**-)

Jefferson Tshabalala, who writes and performs as "J. Bobs" (and appears in performance under the personas "J.Bhoboza" and "J.Bhozza"), is a South African playwright, director and performer, and the founder of the live-arts production house Kiri Pink Nob Arts. He trained in drama at the University of the Witwatersrand and is based in Johannesburg. His work is grounded in Soweto township performance traditions, drawing on children's games and songs, kwaito and popular culture, and is known for deliberately collapsing the divide between "highbrow" and popular theatre through an interactive, comic and satirical style he calls "s'ketshing".

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Tshabalala's best-known play is the political satire Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars (KKK), which examines the entanglement of politicians and businessmen in contemporary South Africa through an invented "Comrade-speak". Written around 2011, it was published as a script in 2018* in a collaboration between Kiri Pink Nob Arts and Monageng Motshabi's diartskonageng*, and received its first full professional staging at the 2023 National Arts Festival in Makhanda, directed by Billy Langa and Mahlatsi Mokgonyana (the Theatre Duo). The production subsequently played the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.

His other stage work includes Poet-O-Type (also styled P.o.e.t.o-type), a play about the underground performance-poetry scene that first appeared around 2015* and was revived for its tenth anniversary at the Market Theatre in 2025, directed by Mahlatsi Mokgonyana with Billy Langa; the satire Daddies of Sugar; the interactive game-show theatre series J.Bobs Live, comprising Off the Record and Location Lekeyshini Lokasie; AmaPiecePieceNyana; and Think Tank: The Dope Shop meets the Art Spaza.

He has also worked as a screen actor, with credits including the films Big Nunu's Little Heist, Do Your Worst and Classified.

Awards, etc.

Tshabalala was the Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre in 2020. He received the Naledi Award for Best New South African Script for Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars (2024*).
