Henning Pieterse (1960-). Poet, prose writer, musician, dramatist, academic.

Career

After school in Stellenbosch and Pretoria he studied at the University of Pretoria and at Unisa (DLitt et Phil 1995), where he was associate professor for Afrikaans and Dutch. He subsequently became Head of the Unit for Creative Writing, University of Pretoria. Since 1993 he is also chief editor of Tydskrif vir Letterkunde. Co-founder, with Louis Esterhuizen, of “Die Bekbrekers” (lit. “the mouth breakers”) to organize poetry slams (bekgevegte) and monthly poetry readings.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 2003 he wrote a bilingual musical theatre text Ystertyd for the Aardklop/SABC2 text competition for cabaret and musical theatre.

Awards, etc.

In 2002 he was awarded the Hertzog Prize for poetry.

Winner in the Afrikaans cabaret section for bilingual music theatre for Ystertyd, Aardklop 2003.
