Guga S'Thebe Theatre
Guga S'Thebe Theatre is a 200 seater, multi-purpose performance space, an extention of the Guga S'Thebe Arts and Cultural Centre and an important part of the wider Langa Cultural Precinct[1]. Funded by the City of Cape Town and Christina Bacht of AIT ArhitekturSalon, the project started in 2013 and was officially handed over to the City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Department on Wednesday, 23 September 2015 to commemorate Heritage Day. The theatre has been built using recyclable materials, notably 11 shipping containers, to a design by Carin Smuts of CCS Studio. The work is a collective effort between the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Cape Town, the architectural faculties of RWTH Aachen (DE), PBSA Düsseldorf (DE) Georgia Tech Atlanta (US), with the support of UCT (SA) and volunteer workers from the local community.
The space is intended as both a performance and an educational venue.
