Good Gracious, Annabelle

Good Gracious, Annabelle is comedy in three acts play by Clare Kummer (1873-1958)[1].

The original text

Written in 1916, the play opened at the Theatre Republic, New York, on 31 October, 1916 and ran for 111 performances till 1 February, 1917. It was performed in London as Good Gracious, Annabelle! at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1922-1923.

The text was published by Samuel French, New York, in 1922, and described as "a romantic farce comedy in three acts". The musical score was published separately in New York by McCarthy & Fisher, ©1919.

The play was performed at the Criterion Theatre Sydney 0n 3 July, 1917, as part of her Australasian tour by Marie Tempest under the Management of Hedley Ward.

Translations and adaptations

The play was turned into a musical and produced in New York by Florenz Ziegfield in 1924, but failed.

Performance history in South Africa

1918: First staged in South Africa as Good Gracious, Annabelle! at His Majesty's Theatre in Johannesburg by Marie Tempest's touring company, opening on 2 September 1918.
