Gavin Bolton ()[] is a Drama in Education (DIE) specialist.

Also known as Gavin M. Bolton.

Biography

A graduate of Sheffield University. He taught for thirteen years to various groups of students, from elementary and secondary to sight and hearing impaired. In 1958, Gavin became Deputy Principal of Secondary Schools. In 1961, he took the position of Drama Advisor to the Education Authority in County Durham. He joined the staff of Durham University in 1964 and taught there until his retirement in 1989. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Victoria University in British Columbia, and a visiting professor at New York University and the University of Central England at Birmingham.

Among his many influential publications are the monographs Towards a Theory of Drama in Education (1979), Drama as Education: An argument for placing drama at the centre of the curriculum (1984), Drama for Learning: Dorothy Heathcote's Mantle of the Expert Approach to Education (1994), and Acting in Classroom Drama: A critical analysis (1998).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He visited South Africa under the auspices of the newly founded the South African Association for Drama and Youth Theatre (SAADYT) to give workshops and lectures at the annual conference and various university drama departments.
