Gary Friedman
Gary Friedman. (19**-) Internationally renowned and influential puppeteer, performer, director and TV director.
He created the puppet plays The Hobo, Puns and Woedie and Shakespeare is Pie.
Friedman moved his base to Johannesburg in 1986 and formed AREPP (African Research and Education Puppetry Programme), a puppetry-in-education project that initially centred on the importance of HIV/AIDS education. Performances and workshops have been held throughout Southern and Central Africa and further afield in Canada, Germany and France. Subsequently the project broadened its field into areas of abuse, domestic violence, voter education and work in prisons.
Since 1999 has a two hour educational puppet show on TV.
