Ernest Fleischmann
FLEISCHMANN, Ernest. (1924-2010) German-born conductor.
Biography
He qualified with a BMus degree at the SACM in 1954. In this period he studied conducting with Enrique Jorda and Albert Coates and was assistant conductor to Erik Chisholm and chorus master at the SACM.
After he left South Africa in the 1959, Fleischmann became general secretary of the LSO until 1967, classical music director of the CBSO for two years, and chief executive of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1969 to 1998.
Fleischmann appeared as guest conductor of the Durban Civic Orchestra on Sunday 30 July 1950, one of the youngest conductors to have conducted there. He headed the committee which designed the programme for the arts festival which was to be held in September 1956 by the Johannesburg City Council to commemorate the seventieth birthday of Johannesburg. He was assisted by Mrs Peta Fisher of Musica Viva.
