E. Saunders
E. Saunders was a soldier in the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot which was sent to the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony (now the Eastern Province, South Africa) between 1860 and 1862 shortly after the Xhosa cattle-killing movement and famine (1857-1858). The regiment was based in Grahamstown and Keiskama Hoek.
Contribution to South African Theatre
E. Saunders Acted in two productions during his stay on the Eastern Frontier. The roles were both male.
August 30, September 11 & 19, 1862: Acted in the adaptation to the stage from Mrs Moodie’s beautiful tale in a three-act drama by members of the Dramatic Club, 2nd Battalion 10th Regiment and presented for the first time, The Royal Quixote. (Oxenstiern, Chancellor of Sweden).
