Daphney Hlomuka, fondly known as 'Sis May' (1949-2008). Actress on stage, radio, television and film.

Biography

Born in Durban, raised in KwaMashu. She died in October 2008 aged 59, survived by her husband Elliot Ngubane and four children.

Training

Career

She started her stage career in the late 1960s as a protegé of Welcome Msomi.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Her early stage credits include uMabatha. She later toured Europe as a cast member op Ipi Tombi. She also had roles in Somdaka (1989), Tooth and Nail, National Arts Festival, 1991, Sophiatown 1994 and Titus Andronicus 1995.

Awards, etc

She won a Vita Award (National) for her role as Mamariti in Sophiatown, 1994. (Performance of the year by an actress in a supporting role).

She received the Living Legend award from the Durban Municipality.
