Committed theatre

Also known as theatre of commitment: Theatre that addresses contemporary social and political issues in society. expand

Committed theatre in South Africa

The term used widely in South Africa in the 1970s and later. See for example the company Committed Artists from that period. (See also Alternative Theatre, Political Theatre, Protest Theatre, Theatre as Weapon, Agit Prop Theatre). In the period of the so-called cultural struggle the notion of committed writing became an important evaluative tool for many critics, distinguishing "serious" writing from "frivolous" work.
