Carol Michèle Kaplan (19**-). Director, Playwright, Scriptwriter. Also credited as Carol Kaplan.



Quoted from the programme notes of Jocasta Rising which she directed in 2004: 'Studied theatre at the Universities of Cape Town and Natal before heading to the United States to join the playwriting programme at Yale Drama School. Graduating with an MFA in playwriting, Carol also attended the American Film Institute Centre for Advanced Film Studies in Los Angeles to study screenwriting.'


Quote continued: ...'She has written and directed for the stage in the United States and in South Africa, and has written screenplays and teleplays, two of which have been produced for U.S. television. Carol has received numerous awards and nominations for her writing and is a member of the Writers Guild of America. She is delighted to be returning to South Africa to celebrate ten years of democracy, and is privileged to have the opportunity to work with this incredible talented cast and creative team.'

A graduate of UCT, she has taught scriptwriting to undergraduate students al Yale University ' since 1990 and at New York University since 1994. She has also conducted screenwriting workshops in Los Angeles.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 1983 she had a role in the PACT production of Barnum.

She wrote and directed Wild Coast at the Grahamstown Festival, 1990 and Jocasta Rising in 2004.

In January 1996 she conducted workshops for beginners and experienced scriptwriters in Johannesburg at the invitation of The South African Scriptwriters Association.

She was on of ten winners of the Chesterfield Film Writers Fellowship In the United States.
