Careful is a comedy by Fiona Coyne.


The original text

A product of the Artscape New Writing Programme, it is a play about an actress deperate for a work in the new South Africa, who gets the opportunity to play a lesbian in a new play and then consults a lesbian critic on the role.

Performance history in South Africa

2009: First produced by Artscape and the Siyasanga Cape Town Theatre Company at the 2009 Absolut International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in , directed by Roy Sergeant, with designs by Alfred Rietmann and starring Diane Wilson and Deirdre Wolhuter. Coyne was nominated as best playwright and Wilson won best actress award at the Festival.

2009: The play opened in Cape Town at the Artscape Arena Theatre on 19th September, 2009, with the same cast.

2016: Performed by Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society (PEMADS), as a double bill with As the Koekie Crumbles (Coyne), from Wednesday, May 18 to Sunday, May 22. Directed by Linda-Louise Swain and performed by Yolande Farrow and Caren Bestbier.
