Basil Rathbone (1892-1967) [1]. International stage and film star.

Biography

He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on 13 June 1892 but three years later his family was forced to flee the country because his father was accused by the Boers of being a British spy.

On 22 April 1911, Rathbone made his first appearance on stage at the Theatre Royal, Ipswich, Suffolk, as Hortensio in The Taming of the Shrew.

He received a Tony Award in 1948 as Best Actor in a Play for his role as "Dr Sloper" in The Heiress.

There is no evidence that he ever performed in South Africa.
