The original text
Set in the Franco-German war of 1870, it was written in 1871. Ostensibly an original work, though onje would alsmst think that it was a translation from a French play, or based on a French story.
Performances were recorded in Cape Town and Paarl in 1874-5, and one in Leiden by De Leidse Tabakwerkersvereniging on 25 January, 1898, as reported on in the Leidsch Dagblad of 29 January, 1896.
