Anne Fischer (1914-1986) was a theatre photographer.

Biography

Born on 18 August in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She arrived in Cape Town in March 1937, where she founded a photographic studio. Fischer was the ‘official photographer’ for a number of companies, including the University of Cape Town’s Little Theatre (circa 1937 and 1965), the Brian Brooke Company in Cape Town (1947 to circa 1955) and Leonard Schach’s Cockpit Players (1956 to 1962) and NTO (1947-1961). She also photographed CAPAB productions during the 1960s. Her theatre photography encompassed both documentation of stage productions and the portraiture of theatre personalities and performers. Her theatre collection, originally donated to the National Documentation Centre for the Performing Arts (later CESAT) it is now housed by the theatre collection of the State Archives in Pretoria. Fischer died in Cape Town in 1986. [Pam Warne]
