Amend is a play by Sibusiso Khwinana (1993-2019).

Original text

Written in 2014, the play is about homophobia and the scourge of so-called corrective rape perpetrated against black lesbians in South African townships.

Amend is a play set during the new democratic South Africa, it focuses on the issue of homosexuality. The Play follows a story of a lesbian (Simphiwe) who gets raped by her guy friend who is convinced that they are in love. In the midst of this tragedy Simphiwe still finds a way of bringing the perpetrator down. The Play explores this taboo debate on the issue and celebrates how individual opinions should differ without infringing on others’ freedom of expression.

Performace history in South Africa

First staged in 2015.

2016: Presented at the State Theatre Festival and the National Arts Festival. The play won Best Production and Best Script at in the State Theatre Festival. Presented by South African State Theatre in association with Blank Page Entertainment in the Momentum Theatre, November 2016, directed by Sibusiso Khwinana.
