Amanda Barrie

Amanda Barrie (1935-) English actress. Born Shirley Anne Broadbent, in Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire, studied drama at the Cone-Ripman School. Started as achild actress on stage, then in the 1960s worked in the West End on shows such as Cabaret, Private Lives, See You Inside, On The Brighter Side, Hobson's Choice, Aladdin, Any Wednesday, A Public Mischief, Six Of One, She Loves Me, Cinderella and Little by Little. Acted in a number of British television and film roles in the 1960s and 1970s, including the title role in Carry on Cleo (1964) and parts in an extensive series of other British comedy films. She is probably best known for her role as a café proprietor's wife, “Alma Sedgewick” (later “Baldwin”), in the British soap opera Coronation Street.

She came to South Africa in 1969 to play the role of Sally Bowles in Taubie Kushlick’s production of Cabaret at the Brooke Theatre.
