Albie Louw (1926-?) was a musician, composer, actor and director.

Biography

Albertus Johannes (Albie) Louw, a versatile musician and composer of light music, was born in 1926 near Malmesbury.

Training

He studied singing and piano at the University of Stellenbosch and the SACM.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He was a member of the University of Cape Town Opera Company until 1971 and sang in operas and concert tours for the Performing Arts Councils. Appearing occasionally as concert pianist, his main interest was the light music repertoire, especially in the broadcasting medium. His “Albie Louw Salon Orchestra”, and the “Safari Sangers” were well known. He also orchestrated and conducted musicals, collaborated with Gé Korsten and taught piano and singing in his studio in Cape Town.

He appeared in: Silas Marner (1961), The Pardoner's Tale (1961), The Portuguese Inn (1962), La serva padrona (1962).

As director, he directed Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood for NAPAC (1984).

As translator, he translated Don Pasquale in Afrikaans.
