A Star is Born: the Rise and Fall of Judy Garland is a musical revue by Amanda Bothma.

Original text

The show follows the life of Judy Garland from her first stage appearance to her untimely death. The production played at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2023 with a 5-star review from renowned theatre crit Vivien Devlin. The production has played to sell-out audiences at festivals around South Africa and received two Standard Bank Ovation Awards at the National Arts Festival in Makanda, 2019 and 2020.

Performance history in South Africa

Produced by Wela Kapela Productions and directed by Amanda Bothma. Starring Kerry Hiles.

2019: First staged at the National Arts Festival.

2020: A filmed version of the production was made available online for the 2020 virtual National Arts Festival.

2023: Played at the Artscape Arena in December.

2024: The production played at the Theatre on the Square in September.
