Kere Nyawo (19**- ) is a South African actor and playwright

Biography

Until 1992 Nyawo was a criminal, a car hijacker, a drug dealer and was eventually imprisoned. After his release, in 1993, he wrote a play, Hola Majita, about prison life in South Africa, demystifying the glory and glamour of gangs and criminals. This had started out as an Arts Alive workshop and Positive Arts Society project at Soweto's Chiawelo Community Centre (Triple C). This turned around his life.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Publically he is perhaps best known for his role as Popeye in the SABC1 TV drama series Zone 14 (2005 onwards).
