(Some sources, e.g. Allardyce Nicoll, list the French source as ''La Loi du Talion'') Taylor's play was first performed on 12 May 1856 in the Olympic Theatre, London. Published by Lacy in 1856 as No XXVII of Lacy's Acting Editions.

Retribution is a domestic drama in four acts by Tom Taylor ( 1817–1880)[1]

The original text

Based on the French story La Peine du Talion by Charles de Bernard (1804-1850: first published by Michel Lévy frères (Paris) in 1853. (Some sources, e.g. Allardyce Nicoll, list the French source as La Loi du Talion) Taylor's play was first performed on 12 May 1856 in the Olympic Theatre, London. Published by Lacy in 1856 as No XXVII of Lacy's Acting Editions.
