Background

Since 1994 we have seen the arrival of two immensely impressive internet-linked arts initiatives of importance to theatre researchers: T.J. de Klerk’s Artslink network and Etienne van Heerden’s LitNet (originally only Afrikaans, now also in English). Both these initiatives have grown way beyond the original intention, bursting with categories, covering most literary and art forms and most theoretical perspectives.

The new millennium has also seen a proliferation of other internet-based information, documentation and even encylopaedic projects, including South African History Online (SAHO), the Arterial Network, the Encyclopaedia of South African Arts, Culture and Heritage (ESAACH) and of course the Encyclopaedia of South African Theatre, Film, Media and Performance ESAT itself.

As a part of ESAT's comprehensive Bibliography, a list of Internet Sources on Theatre, Film, Media and Performance in Southern Africa is provided for researchers.
