KLOPPER, Henning Johannes. (1895-1985) Cultural activist and promotor of Afrikanerdom. First chairman of Spoorbond an Afrikaans Railwaymen's Union and a precursor to the influential cultural body, the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging, which he also founded in the SA Railways to promote the Afrikaans language and cultural aspirations. He organised the 1938 symbolic Ossewatrek ("Ox Wagon Trek"), to commemorate the Voortrekkers of 1838. Later a member of Parliament (1943-1974) and first Speaker of the House under the Republic (1961-1974).
