Drummer Green served in the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot when the Regiment was sent to the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony (now the Eastern Province, South Africa) between 1860 and 1862, shortly after the Xhosa cattle-killing movement and famine (1857-1858). The regiment was based in Grahamstown and Keiskama Hoek. (Modern spelling: Keiskammahoek.)

He held the rank of drummer when he arrived in the Cape Colony and performed in only one play.
