Die Gouvernante ("The governess") is a one act comedy ("posse") by Carl Theodor Körner (1791-1813)[1]


The original text

Written and possibly published in 1813, performed at the Königliche Schauspiele in Berlin, 1820 and published in Vienna by Wallishauser in 1819.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Dutch as De Gouvernante, possibly by William Marten Westerman.

(F.C.L. Bosman, 1980, has it wrongly as De Goevernante on one occasion)

Performance history in South Africa

1909: Performed in Dutch as De Gouvernante by Aurora III in in the ANV Saal (the building of the Algemeen Nederlandsch Verbond), Cape Town, on 31 August, as part of a festive meeting to celebrate the birthday of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
