Die Eiserne Larve ("The iron mask") is a German tragedy in five acts by Heinrich Szchokke (1771-1848)[1].

The original text

A play based on the legend of the man in the iron mask, it was first published in Bayreuth by J. A. Lübecks Erben 1804.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Dutch as Het Ijzeren Masker ("The Iron Mask") by an anonymous author, and published in Amsterdam, by J. C. van Kesteren, 1833.

Performance history in South Africa

1876: Performed in Dutch as Het Ijzeren Masker (Schokke) by Aurora II at the Oddfellows Hall, Cape Town, on 11 July. (Cited erroneously as Het Ijzeren by Jill Fletcher, 1994.)
