Anton Welman (1949-2001) was an actor on stage, television and radio, drama teacher, set and decor designer.

Biography
Born in Wesselsbron, matriculated in Sasolburg. He died on 16 November 2001.
Training
Graduated from the University of the Orange Free State Drama Department in 1970.
Career
He worked for PACOFS from 1971 till 1974. He joined the teaching staff of the University of the Orange Free State Drama Department in 1975, where he remained until his death in 2001.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
He wrote the children's play Hansie en Grietjie and translated another children's play, An Apple for the Princess, into Afrikaans as 'n Appel vir die Prinses.
He translated The Cagebirds into Afrikaans with the title Die Voëlhok.
Some of his many roles on stage were in Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey (1972), Bobaas van die Boendoe (1972), Along Came a Spider (1980), Metamorphosis (1982), Die Hekse van Salem (1982), Hamlet in Afrikaans (1983), Julius Caesar (1983), Kalkoen se Kind (1987), Post Mortem (1993), Graswewenaar (1994), Drie Susters Twee (1997), The Student Prince (1998) and Post Mortem (2000). His last appearance on stage was in Nico Luwes's Waaihoek se Vinkel en Koljander in October 2001.
He also directed Pieter Fourie's Post Mortem in 2000.
Awards, etc
He received the Piers Nicholson Award for his contribution to theatre development in the Free State in 1995. He was nominated for an AA Vita Award for best comedy actor in The Student Prince, 1998.
