G. Wannenburg

G. Wannenburg (fl 1840's-1880's) was an amateur actor.

Also referred to wrongly as Wannenberg by on occasion.

Biography

He was a Cape Town based machinist and amateur actor.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

A certain Wannenberg is mentioned by Groom as being a member of the Dutch society Tot Nut en Vermaak in Cape Town between 1843 and 1857 (though Bosman, 1923, corrects the spelling to "Wannenburg"). The name G. Wannenberg next appears as a member of and actor for the of the amateur company Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst in 1865-1873 and for the society Kamer de Eendracht ("chamber of unity") in Cape Town in the years 1876-1883 (this one bearing the motto "Door Oefening wordt de kunst verkregen" i.e. "art is attained through practice") in Cape Town in the years 1876-1883.
