Die Verminktes ("The Maimed") is an Afrikaans play by Bartho Smit (1924–1986).


The original text

A controversial Afrikaans play on miscegenation and Calvinist angst. Written in the 1950s. First published in 1960 by Afrikaanse Pers Boekhandel. A second edition was published by Perskor in 1976.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as The Maimed by the author himself in 1959. The English version remains unpublished.

Performance history in South Africa

Submitted to both National Theatre Organisation (in Afrikaans) and London's Royal Court Theatre (in English) in 1959.
