[[Hottentot]] was the name given to a member of the hunter-gatherer people of '''[[Khoikhoi]]''' descent by the [[Dutch]] settlers in the mid 17th century, in immitation of the sounds they heard in the [[Khoekhoe]] languages, spoken by the [[Khoikhoi]].
