Dawid Minnaar (1956-) is a bilingual (Afrikaans/English) actor for stage, radio, TV and film.

Biography

Born in Upington in the Northern Cape, the youngest of 5 children, and grew up on the family farm Rooidam, Namibia and went to primary school in Bethanie.

He completed a B.A at the University of Stellenbosch, Department of Drama, and a B.A. Honours degree in Drama at the University of Cape Town.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Primarily known as a fine and versatile actor, his stage career started in the 1980s and by the 1990s he was one of the leading bilingual performers in the country.

(CAPAB, 1983); Razumov, Diepe Grond (Market Theatre and Baxter Theatre, 1985 and 1986); Not About Heroes, (Volute Productions at the Baxter Theatre and Upstairs at the Market, 1986); Whale Nation (The Black Sun and the Whale Well, 1989); Flight (Market Theatre, 1989) Nag, Generaal (Market Theatre, 1989); Speed-the-Plow (Upstairs at the Market, 1990); Faustus in Africa (Market Theatre and Grahamstown Festival 1995), Ubu and the Truth Commission (Grahamstown Festival 1997, Tango del Fuego (2001), international tour 2014); Boklied (KKNK, 1999?*); Boetman is die bliksem in! [“Boetman is the Hell In”] (Aardklop festival 2000); Die Toneelstuk (KKNK, 2001); Confessions of Zeno (Spier Amphitheatre, 2003); Romeo and Julia (Vleis, Rys en Aartappels, 2005),Swartskaap, Macbeth.slapeloos (Aardklop and KKNK, 2013-2015).

His film debut was in 1980 Gemini (under the name David Minnaar), Fiela se Kind (1988) and was followed by Nag van die 19de [1] (1991), The Visual Bible: Matthew Judas (1993); Ouma se Slim Kind (2007), Hansie: A True Story (2008); Die Wonderwerker (2012);

Television roles

Konings (1991), Paradys (1994), Sewende Laan (SABC TV2, 2000-2001; 2003-); Amalia, Binnelanders (Episode dated 31 August 2009); Binneland (2005-2014).

Contribution as playwright

In 1979 he wrote a play called Tot Hiertoe en Verder ("To here and further").

Awards, etc

Dawid won Vita Awards as best actor for Diepe Grond, Kafka Dances and Nag, Generaal, and best supporting actor for Scenes from an Execution and Ek, Anna van Wyk. Judged best actor at Aardklop for macbeth.slapeloos in 2013.
