He wrote many plays in the period from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s. He considered himself to be a political playwright.

The Dhlomo Theatre opened 21 March 1983 with his play Night of the Long Wake. He also wrote the plays Dying of the Light, Easter Weekend 1960, Dutchman, Shades of a Conflict and Grey Corner.
