Mostellaria is a Latin play by Plautus (c. 254 – 184 BC)[1].

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as Mostellaria, or the Haunted House by Henry Thomas Riley, published 1912.

Kevin P. Joyce's play When the Cat's Away is loosely based on Mostellaria, transposing the story from Athens to modern day Nantucket.

Translated and adapted into Afrikaans under the original Latin title by Dawid de Villiers, while a student at Stellenbosch University in 1978.


1978: Performed at the USAT Dramafees, by the residences Huis Ten Bosch and Hombré at the University of Stellenbosch, on 14 March. Directed by Deon Furnell, with Marilize van Rensburg, Magdalena Mouton, Francois Uys, Gerhard Steenkamp, Deon Furnell, Shaun Clunie and Eugene Besselaar. Stage manager B. Bester, assisted by A. Jacobs.
