Locked in with A Lady: A Sketch from Life is a one act farce by H.R. (Henry Robert) Addison (1805-1876)[1]

Also found simply as Locked in with A Lady

The original text

According to Nicoll (2009), the play was first performed at the Royal Theatre, London in 1863, published in London by T.H. Lacy and Samuel French, 1863 and in Chicago by the Drama Publishing Company [n.d.]

Interestingly, if Nicoll and other sources are correct, it appears that it may have been performed in South Africa before its official premiere in London.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1862: Performed as Locked in with A Lady in the Eastern Cape village of Keiskama Hoek's Garrison Theatre by the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot on June 21, with a cast that included J. F. Gay (Peter Follet), J. Davies (Mary Markam), W. Dansie (A Voice), J. M'Kechnie (Several cats). Also performed was a scene from Alarcos (Disraeli), followed by The Irish Tiger (Morton). (For more on contemporary responses to the performances, see the entry on the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot)
