Gavin Hood (1963- ) is a South African film director, screenwriter, producer and actor, best known for writing and directing the feature film Tsotsi (2005) which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Amongst others he also directed the films X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Ender's Game.

Biography

He was born on 12 May 1963.

Training

After his law degree at Wits, he enrolled in film school at the University of California in Los Angeles.

Career

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Stage appearances in South Africa include I Can't Wait to Tie You to the Sofa in 1990 and The Tempest at Maynardville in 1994.

Scenarist of the South African film A Reasonable Man that was shown in its original form at the Cannes film festival and awarded the Diane Thomas award established by Steven Spielberg.

He produced the international film Eye in the Sky that was filmed in The Western Cape in South Africa, 2015.
