Faure, its purpose was to provide higher education for the Dutch youths and as an opposition for the English schools. This Dutch institute was affiliated to the Tot Nut van t’ Algemeen school, which was considered to be the best preliminary education at the Cape. In 1831, Dr. A. N. E. Changuion became the professor there and  played an important role in Dutch education and culture during the first part of the 19th century. He left after the Athenaeum became anglicised as the South African College, the fore-runner of the [[University of Cape Town]].

The Zuid-Afrikaansche Athenaeum was an institute for higher education in Dutch, modelled on the Athenaeum in Amsterdam.
