A play by N.C. Hunter (1908 – 1971).

The original play

Apparently, Dame Edith Evans originally rescued the text of Hunter's first play from agent Binkie Beaumont's slush pile, and it was then first performed at the Haymarket Theatre, London with Sybil Thorndike and Wendy Hiller, running for 835 performances between 1951 and 1952.

Produced in 1978 with Wendy Hiller and Ingrid Bergman in its cast.

Filmed in 1980, with Joan Sims, Virginia McKenna, Ronald Pickup, and Penelope Keith.
