Warona Seane (19*-), is an actress, storyteller and singer, director and artistic director.


Biography

Contribution to South African theatre

As performer

She has appeared in many productions over the years, including Symbols of Sex and State (Pieter-Dirk Uys, 2000), For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf (2002, Fleur du Cap Award for Best Performance in a Musical or Revue, shared with the cast), [[The Alchemist’s Heart]], The Lion and the Jewel (State Theatre Pretoria, 2008), Tin Bucket Drum (Con Cowan Theatre, University of Johannesburg, 2015); Nothing but the Truth ; Nongogo (Naledi nomination 2006); Kabi Thulo’s Tsela (an adaptation of Waiting for Godot) and Ukutshona ko Mendi: Did We Dance (directed by Mandla Mbothwe).

In 2005 she also participated in the The Baxter Storytelling Festival at the Baxter Theatre Centre (in association with Sibikwa Community Theatre Project, 2005)


As director

Her directing credits include Sacred Thorn, Yes Medem, Nelisiwe Xaba’s solos Fragments of an Orgy, Mute Echoes and Romeo and Juliet, For Coloured Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf; We Are Here; The Mountaintop (Naledi Awards Best Director nomination 2013), Eclipsed by Danai Gurira (2014).

As teacher

She has taught at the Wits School of Arts and the Market Theatre Laboratory.

As artistic director

In 2013 she became the artistic director for the Soweto Theatre, and set about seeking new ways of making theatre that would speak to the community.
