An Afrikaans translation and free adaptation to local circumstances of Spiel im Schloss by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnár [1] (1878-1952).


Translations and adaptations

Vrydag, an Afrikaans translation and free adaptation to local circumstances by H. Rooseboom of Spiel im Schloss by the Hungarian playwright. Called an "anecdote" it was set in a large hotel in Muizenberg, on the days of performance . Published by Sesam, 1926.

Performance history in South Africa

1929: Produced by the Oranjeklub in the Railway Institute, Cape Town, on 3 and 4 May. Directed by Jas. J. Broodryk, with D.H.P. Breek, H. Rooseboom, Gideon Roos, miss C. Kotzé, Ch. Weich, J.J. Blom and H.J. Rooseboom Jnr.

1949: Directed by Herman Steytler for K.A.T. in September.

Translations and adaptations

An Afrikaans translation by Tine Balder and Louis van Niekerk of Hugo Claus's 1969 play Vrijdag.

Performance history in South Africa

Presented by PACT in the State Theatre Arena, 1971. Directed by Schalk Jacobsz, designs by David Lister. The cast were Carel Trichardt, Leonora Nel and Paul Eilers.
