Virginia

Virginia is a play by Edna O'Brien [1] (1930-*), an Irish novelist, memoirist, playwright, poet and short story writer. In 1981, she wrote a play, Virginia based on the lives and writings of Virginia and Leonard Woolf and it was staged originally in Canada and subsequently in the West End of London at the Theatre Royal Haymarket with Maggie Smith and directed by Robin Phillips.

Performance history in South Africa

1983: In South Africa the play was directed by Bobby Heaney for the Market Theatre Company at Upstairs at the Market opening 14 February 1983, featuring Sandra Duncan (Virginia), Robert Whitehead (The Man, first appearing as Virginia's father then as Leonrad Woolf), Yvonne Banning, Diane Wilson (Vita Sackville-West), also performed in the Baxter Studio in 1983-1984. Designed by Andrew Botha, lighting design by Mannie Manim.
