The buildings, designed by Sir Herbert Baker form a semi-circle around the amphitheatre, high above terranced gardens and lawns that spread down to Church Street in Arcadia.

This amphithreatrical space was utilized for a number of public demonstrations and performances over the years since its inauguration on **** 19**, including the Women’s March of 9 August 1956 and the Inauguration of Nelson Mandela as first president of the “new” post-apartheid South Africa on 10 May 1994.
