Tromp Terre’Blanche (b. Port Elizabeth, 22/08/1928 – d. Johannesburg, 26/09/1984) was an actor. Also credited as Tromp Terre’blanche, Tromp Terreblanche, Tromp Terréblanche and Tromp Terreblanché.

Biography

Tromp Etienne Terblanche was born in Port Elizabeth, the only child of Peter James Garfield Terblanche, a farmer in the Mossel Bay district, and his wife Millicent Louisa Bruns. As a child he already had a love for drama and music and after his parents’ move to Kroonstad in what was then the Orange Free State, he began to have lessons in elocution and song. From the age of sixteen he began to take part in competitions and obtained a number of diplomas. As an amateur he was one of the founder members of the Kroonstadse Teatergroep. Subsequently he was asked to join the National Theatre Organisation and appeared in Die Vrek (1951), an Afrikaans translation of Molière’s L’Avare, en As Ons Twee Eers Getroud Is! (1952) by Gerhard J. Beukes. Also appearing in Die Vrek was Isabel Pienaar, who was to become his wife. By this time he had adapted his surname to Terre’Blanche. From the early 1960s onwards he concentrated primarily on film roles and later also featured frequently on television. He worked with most of the prominent directors and became one of the industry’s most sought-after character actors. He is also known to have done extensive radio work, including the popular police drama series Squad Cars. He and Isabel were divorced in 1974. South African Idols finalist and musician Jacques Terre’Blanche is their grandson.
