The Starlight Express

The Starlight Express is a children's play by Violet Pearn, based on the novel A Prisoner in Fairyland by Algernon Blackwood, with songs and incidental music written by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar in 1915.

Translations and adaptations

Translated and adapted into Afrikaans by Leonie Pienaar, entitled Deur 'n Skrefie.

Performance history in South Africa

1942: Deur 'n Skrefie was produced by Leonie Pienaar with students of the University of Cape Town Department of speech-training and dramatic art in the Little Theatre. Ballet students under the direction of Dulcie Howes also took part.
