The Squire is a comedy in three acts by Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934)[1]

First performed at St James's Theatre, London, on 29 December, 1881.

Thomas Hardy ()[] claimed that the play was a plagiarised from Hardy's own stage adaptation of his novel The Mayor of Casterbridge ()[].

1882-3: Performed by the Mabel Hayes Company in the old Theatre Royal in Burg Street, Cape Town, as part of a season as lessee and manager of the venue.
