The Sjambok ("The whip") was a short-lived critical newspaper, published by the Schlesinger Organisation and edited by Stephen Black. It was soon forced to close because of the many libel suits brought against it.

In July 1931 Black started a New Sjambok, but he fell ill and died shortly afterwards in Johannesburg on the 8th August 1931 of lung cancer, and that was the end of his new endeavour.
